A new report has raised serious concerns about poultry litter pollution in Donegal.
The Guardian reports that investigations are underway into the shipping of animal waste from Northern Ireland into the Republic. The expansion of the poultry industry in Northern Ireland has produced a larger volume of poultry litter, which is cheaper to export to farmers in the Republic of Ireland.
There are concerns over the impact of ammonia emissions when the manure is being directly spread over sensitive farmland, and as digestate.
Issues relating to the movement of animal manure are currently under investigation by multi-government agencies in Northern Ireland and the UK’s Office of Environmental Protection. The probe is looking into allegations of falsified letters claiming to be from Teagasc in the Republic of Ireland relating to planning applications for livestock farms.
