It was an emotional day for John Kelly yesterday after he broke the Irish Shot Put record at the Cork City Sports International Meet.

The Finn Valley man threw out to 20.16m World Athletics Continental Tour bronze meet, breaking the 20.07m record set by Eric Favors in May of this year.

The Irish record was enough for the St Johnston native to win the bronze medal, with Italian Nick Ponzio winning with a throw of 20.71m, while American Andrew Liskowitz took silver, throwing 20.57m.

But Kelly, who is based in Sweden, broke down and fell to his knees, full of emotion after the announcement of his throw was a new Irish record.

Kelly can be seen in the video below ready to throw in the Shot Put circle in the blue vest.
