Brendan Boyle was grateful to the Donegal LGFA after their Senior Championship trophy will now be the Donna Dunnion Boyle Memorial Cup.
The new trophy name was unveiled on Tuesday night at the The Kernan Group Ladies Championship Draw, with Donna’s husband Brendan Boyle, her father Danny Dunnion, and her brother Barry Dunnion in attendance.
It’s the first time there has been a name put on the trophy, in memory of the huge loss of Donna, who was a massive player for Four Masters.
Donna played for almost 20 years with her county and club and was captain of the Four Masters side that won two-in-a-row in 2006 and 2007 in the Donegal Senior Championship.
Donna was also part of the Donegal side who won the 2003 All-Ireland Junior Football Championship.
Donna’s husband and former Donegal county player Brendan Boyle was moved by the ‘lovely gesture’ from the county board.
“She’d be very proud of this here today it would mean the world to her and it’s a fitting tribute to her because the one thing Donna loved in life was playing football and especially pulling on the Four masters jersey.
“So we’re very grateful to the county board and the whole executive for this lovely gesture.”
Brendan added: “Hopefully one day her daughter Aoibheann and some of her nieces might fight to contest this trophy in years to come and it’d be a fitting tribute to Donna if they were able to do that so we look forward to the future.”
