Boris Johnson has decided to resign as Tory leader and prime minister of the UK amid chaos in his government.
But he won’t be leaving Number 10 just yet, as he is expected to remain as a caretaker PM until October when a new Tory leader is selected.
Mr Johnson reportedly agreed to stand down this morning after a slew of resignations in his cabinet. Some 50 Tory MPs quit the Government in a period of less than 48 hours. Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis resigned from Mr Johnson’s government on Thursday morning.
Many ministers cited no confidence as their reasons for departing, while Science minister George Freeman said: “the chaos in your Cabinet and No 10 this month is destroying our credibility”.
Mr Johnson is expected to make a statement at around lunchtime today.
