West Donegal councillor Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig is pushing for amendments to allow more communities to access the Local Improvement Scheme.
The road repair scheme provides funding for rural roads not in the charge of the Council. The roads provide access to people’s homes and farms or to amenities such as lakes, rivers, mountains and beaches.
However, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said the scheme excludes a large number of roads in west Donegal that aren’t used by farmers.
He asked Independent TD Thomas Pringle to ask Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan if the scheme could be changed to widen the scope for applications.
However, Minister Ryan said his Department has no proposal to amend the existing legislative arrangements in relation to the criteria for the scheme.
Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said he was disappointed by the reply “but I’ll keep at this”, he told Donegal Daily.
€716,560 was granted for LIS works in Donegal in 2022.
