A unique commemorative plaque has been unveiled in Glenties for those who are buried in unmarked graves.

The memorial stone was unveiled at the New Graveyard.

It follows work between local parish priest Fr Gerard Cunningham and the local Glenties Community Development Group.

The inscription on the stone reads “In loving memory of our children, families and people buried here in unmarked graves. Rest in peace.”

A spokesperson for the GCDG said “We were delighted to work with Fr Gerard on erecting this memorial stone in the graveyard to commemorate those who are buried in unmarked graves.

“We all felt that some acknowledgement was required in memory of those who lie with no name over their grave and we worked with Fr Gerard to design and erect a suitable monument which we were happy to fund.

“We hope people find this memorial a fitting acknowledgement.”
