AIB has scrapped plans to make 70 of their branches ‘cashless’ around the country after a public backlash.
The bank said it took the decision in recognition of the “customer and public unease” that the decision had caused.
“AIB has decided not to proceed with the proposed changes to its bank services,” the statement read.
Six branches in Donegal were due to be affected; Ballybofey, Ballyshannon, Buncrana, Carndonagh, Dungloe and Killybegs.
Earlier today, the Central Bank of Ireland said that vulnerable customers should have full access to basic banking services.
Donegal TDs had expressed their opposition to the plan which would have seen a number of local banks lose services.
Speaking in Donegal, Heather Humphreys had said that “AIB have shown a complete disregard for rural communities and have not consulted with them”.
She called on AIB to halt its decision to allow for a review of retail banking to be completed.
Minister Humphreys said that she has been “visiting rural communities all over the country and they are rightly angry at this decision by AIB”.
