Donegal county star Eoghan Ban Gallagher was delighted to help Killybegs retain Division 1 status while he paid tribute to Declan Bonner after resigning as county manager
A late James McSharry point gave Killybegs the 0-10 to 0-9 win over Glenswilly, who were relegated to Division 2, while Conor Cunningham scored four great frees in the second half for the victors.
After being 0-3 to 0-0 down early on, with the breeze to their advantage, Killybegs started slow, but Eoghan wasn’t too worried
“We always knew it was going to come down to the wire and we had confidence in our forwards that they could kick the scores against the breeze and.
“We kicked plenty of wides and made plenty of mistakes but in the end we kept battling away for each other and in the end it got us a one point win.
Eoghan was happy to restore the pride in his area by retaining top flight football as Killybegs look towards the Donegal SFC now in three weeks
“Defensively we were fantastic, we need to sharpen up the attacking play but that’ll come now with Championship in a few weeks time so we’ll tidy up for that.
“But it was a great day for everyone in Killybegs GAA to stay in Division 1 football.”
The Donegal county star also thanked Declan Bonner for his service as county manager as the pair worked together for over a decade.
Bonner resigned on Wednesday night following his annual report for 2022 at the county board meeting on Convoy
Eoghan said: “First of all I just want to thank Declan, he was a manager of mine for the last 10 or 11 years. He was a huge part of my life coming up as a senior footballer. I owe him nothing but thanks.
“I think Declan owes the county nothing and he always wanted what was best for Donegal GAA and Na Rossa and I think every Donegal supporter can only thank Declan, he dedicated over 30 years of his life (to Donegal).”
