The Donegal Sports Partnership has urged people to be careful in the open water this bank holiday weekend.
Groups and individuals intending to use the open water for sporting or leisure purposes are being urged to respect the dangers around water by Donegal Sports Partnership Coordinator, Myles Sweeney.
“We would encourage people to familiarise themselves with and follow key water safety messages. These include checking weather, water conditions, and tides before going on or in the water, letting someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back, and not going alone – even if whoever you bring doesn’t get on or in the water,” Mr. Sweeney commented.
“It’s also important that parents and guardians educate children on these key water safety messages, and that people are aware of the many hazards of swimming in undesignated areas. If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast, dial 112/999 or use VHF Ch 16 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
According to the Donegal Sports Partnership Coordinator, there’s always a notable increase in the numbers taking to the water and enjoying water-based activities at this time of the year.
“With that in mind, it’s vital that people know how to be safe around, on, and in the water.” he said.
“People should wear an appropriate lifejacket or buoyancy aid if they are doing activities on the water. They should also ensure they are visible in the water, that they don’t go in or on the water during reduced light, and that they don’t use inflatable toys in open water,” Mr. Sweeney added.
On average, 115 people die in Ireland each year from drowning.
“Swim Ireland’s focus is on public awareness and education, and Donegal Sports Partnership supports their efforts fully. The reduction in the number of people who drown can only come about by changing attitudes and behaviours. So, the message from Donegal Sports Partnership when it comes to water activities is safety first at all times.”
