Tonnta Swim School will be hosting a Swim Challenge event on Saturday the 30th of July, with the proceeds going towards the purchase of a defibrillator for Marble Hill Beach.

The event is for the swimmers that have attended the Tonnta Swim School and to celebrate the achievements they have made over the course of the summer.

There are four different distances that swimmers can choose from; 50m (shallow water), 100m, 400m and 1km, depending on each person’s skill level.

At the event on Saturday, there will also be a dash for prizes and fun races for kids.

Tonnta Swim School was set up in 2017 by Triona McMenamin, in the hopes to get both adults and children into the water to help develop their confidence, awareness and aquatic skills.

Triona, who has been involved in teaching swimming safety for years, said that the ability to have a defibrillator at Marble Hill Beach is something that will save lives.

“The nearest defib to Marble Beach is in the Shandon Hotel and even that is still a few minutes away,” she said.

“The beach attracts so many people each year, anyone that visits could need one.

“It is so important that we have one near, it will save lives for sure.”

Triona also encouraged local businesses that would like to get involved or to donate spot prizes to please contact her.

Registration begins at 9.30am on Saturday the 30th of July, and the swim will start at 10.00am. Wetsuits, a bright hat and tow floats (adults) are compulsory.

The entry fee is €10 and all proceeds go towards a defibrillator for Marble Hill Beach.

Donations can also be made via a gofundme page set up by Triona: https://www.gofundme.com/f/defib-for-marble-hill-beach?qid=488187e3149b783df18a508a5f2fba57
