The public is being invited to share views on the plans for the new Market Square on Letterkenny Main Street.

The space is set for a major overhaul to maximise its potential and make it a valuable part of a vibrant town centre.

A proposed redesign by Joseph McCallion was chosen following an architectural competition led by Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Donegal County Council during 2020/2021.

Public consultation is now open, with submissions being invited up to 5th September 2022.

Letterkenny Market Square Design by Joe McCallion Landscape Architect

The new layout is a functional and contemporary celebration of Letterkenny town’s past, present and future.  The design proposes to be less car dominant with two plazas, a new water feature, new public seating, lighting, street furniture and cycle stands delivering an enhanced capacity for civic events and social purpose and to ensure all abilities access.

Plans and particulars of the proposed development will be available for inspection online at www.donegalcoco.ie or for inspection at the Council’s offices in Lifford and Letterkenny.

Submissions and observations with respect to the proposed development, dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area in which the development is situated may be made in writing to The Co. Secretariat, Donegal County Council, Lifford, County Donegal, before 4.30pm on Monday 5th September 2022. Please mark the front of the envelope with the project name ‘Letterkenny 2040-Reimagined Market Square.’

The proposed development is an important lead project of a wider urban regeneration programme known as ‘Letterkenny 2040’ which also involves the preparation of an ambitious, transformative and overarching regeneration strategy for Letterkenny town centre to achieve its goals as a Regional Growth Centre in line with its identified role in the National Planning Framework (NPF), The Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES) and in the cross border context of the North West City Region.
