One of West Donegal’s most iconic corner shops is to close this evening after almost one hundred years in business.

Siopa Matt in Gaoth Dobhair has remained open through all sorts of challenges and has been used by generations of families in the area.

Now the Bonner family has announced with huge sadness that the shop will be closing for the last time this evening (Sunday).

On the shop’s Facebook page the family left a message to all customers down through the years thanking them for their custom.

The touching message reads “After nearly 100 years in business and having our doors opened 364 days a year, we as a family have come to the decision to close the doors of Siopa Matt this evening for the last time.

“Throughout those years we have met some amazing people from all parts of the world and we are so happy to have you share part of our story with us.

The late Matt Bonner

“For the locals of An Bun beag & Gaoth Dobhair, some of you have watched us grow up and we have been blessed to be able to watch as your children and grandchildren have also ventured through our doors for our famous 99’s every summer. We would like to thank you all immensely for your support over the years, we couldn’t have done it with without you.

“The unforgettable memories and the relationships we have built with you will forever live on in these walls that were built by Annie and Matt Bonner.

“We have an exciting new generation coming through, so for now it’s just a see you later. Grá mór I gconaí,
Treasa & clann Mhatt uilig.”

Hundreds of messages of thanks and support are coming in for the Bonner family who have served the community loyally for decades.

Local county councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig said he was so sad by the closure of the shop.

“I have shopped here quite a lot and watched all my cousins work here. It’s a really sad day. I’m so sad about this,” he said.
