Donegal Gardaí have issued an appeal to drivers ahead of tonight’s forecasted deluge.
“We advise all road users to exercise caution while using the roads over the weekend as Met Éireann have advised of an orange weather warning for heavy rainfall in Donegal,” a garda spokesperson said.
Drivers and motorcyclists are being warned that during a prolonged dry spell, a build-up of oil and rubber deposit develops on the road.
“When the weather breaks, this deposit mixes with rainwater and the road surface then becomes hazardous,” the spokesperson added.
“Slow down and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.”
The advice came after Met Éireann upgraded its heavy rainfall alert to ‘Status Orange’ for Donegal and 12 other counties for early tomorrow morning.
The national met office said local intense rainfall (50mm) is expected in Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Waterford.
The warning will be valid from 4am to 8am tomorrow morning.
