Jodie’s Benefit To Studying Close To Home – an ATU Donegal CAO story

According to the latest cost of student living survey by the Technological University (TU) Dublin, parents of students who sat their Leaving Certificate this summer face a bill of as much as €13,305 per annum to put their child through college if they choose to study away from home. In fact, it could cost as much as €53,220 to send a child away to university for a four-year degree programme.

Many students are choosing to study degree programmes closer to home, because the benefits of studying closer to home go beyond the financial saving! Local student, Jodie Gallagher, enjoyed studying locally and even learned to drive during her time at college in ATU Donegal, which is an essential skill and gave her that element of freedom while staying at home.

Jodie began her degree in General Nursing at ATU Donegal in 2018. She always knew that nursing was the career path for her and was impressed by the nursing facilities at ATU Donegal when she visited the Letterkenny campus during Open Day. Jodie secured a scholarship from Optum Ireland during her four years studying at ATU Donegal and embraced all aspects of her nursing degree. Jodie reckons one of the main benefits of studying closer to home was the fact that she was able to learn to drive and was able to save up and purchase her first car.

Many students like Jodie are choosing to study locally. If you are hoping to receive a CAO offer from ATU Donegal this Thursday and want to check out facilities ahead of your university start date, attend the ATU Donegal Information Day which takes place in the Letterkenny campus this Friday 9 September from 11am to 4pm.

If you have not made a CAO application but have now decided that you would like to attend university in ATU Donegal this September, there is still time to apply to secure a place through the CAO ‘Available Places’ facility. This facility opens this Friday 9 September at 12.00pm. Students interested in the ‘Available Places’ facility should come to the ATU Information Day this Friday for support in making a late application, or alternatively, contact the Schools Engagement team directly on lauren.reynolds@atu.ie or tracy.sheridan@atu.ie
