There is a deep sense of shock and mourning in the Rossnowlagh Franciscan Community following the sudden passing of Fr. Florian Farrelly.
Fr Florian lost his life in a road collision on Wednesday afternoon. He was driving to visit the Franciscan Friary in Killarney when the accident occurred.
Fr Florian served at the Rossnowlagh Franciscan Friary and was hugely respected in the local community. He spent time in the south Donegal friary on a number of occasions since the 1980s. His most recent appointment was in 2020 when he was warmly welcomed back to Rossnowlagh. He joined the special celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the opening of the friary in June and gave blessings as recently as last weekend.
As a member of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor, Fr Florian gave himself totally to God. Local members of the community have paid tribute to Fr Florian’s lifetime of service, remembering him as a sincere man of faith and a kind-hearted gentleman who supported many families in their time of need.
A message from the Rossnowlagh friary shared the sad news with friends and patrons this morning and said: “It is with great sadness that I bring you the news that Fr. Florian has returned to his loving God. He died from a motor accident yesterday afternoon. Please keep his family and our community in your prayers please.”
A tribute from the Killarney Franciscans said: “Florian was on his way to the Friary in Killarney when the accident happened. He was really looking forward to spending time with us and with his very good friends in the area. We had his room ready and were waiting for him to arrive when we got the sad news. Florian is with God and God is very near. Sincere sympathy to all those who knew him and loved him in Killarney and surrounding areas. Pat and all the Franciscan Community.”
Funeral details to be confirmed.
