A large rescue operation is underway off Mayo this morning to rescue a man trapped in a sea cave.
He was one of two people who were caught by rising waters in the cave last night.
A woman was taken to safety by a kayaker, who was in the sea nearby.
It is thought the man and woman may have been swept into the cave as the tide came in last evening.
The RNLI Lifeboat from Ballyglass has been joined by Coast Guard personnel from Killala, along with gardaí, Civil Defence teams and local fire and ambulance crews for the ongoing rescue operation.
The man is located at the baack of the cave on a ledge and is not understood to be injured.
He has responded to lights shone by search teams in his direction, through the night.
However, sea conditions have made it difficult for rescuers to reach him. While the tide is receding this morning, waters are still considered to be quite treacherous inside the cave.
Search teams are continuing to monitor the situation and examining the best way to proceed.
