The Good2Go training programme designed to enable participants organise and lead health-enhancing physical activity sessions for older adults, will be rolled out by Donegal Sports Partnership in October.
The three workshops will be delivered on three consecutive Mondays at The Vestry next to St. Conal’s in Letterkenny starting on October 10th continuing on October 17th and concluding on October 24th. All three sessions will take place from 10 am to 2 pm.
The workshops are focused on three main topics – functional fitness which will cover strength, balance and mobility; Social games covering the most popular much-loved target games, and exercise to music through the Step2the Beat workshop.
Looking ahead to the workshop series, Donegal Sports Partnership’s Community Development Officer, Karen Guthrie, said: “This is the first time we have undertaken a programme of this kind. We are noticing a slow return to normality through our community programmes, and are keen to encourage older people back out to their respective community halls again.
“With that, we need qualified, passionate people to support this process. The Good2Go training is designed to empower and up skill those interested in enhancing the physical activity levels and lives of older people in their community.
“There are active retirement groups out there which might not have a focus on physical activity, so it’s about trying to get them thinking more about physical activity, whether that’s through fun taster sessions or providing them with equipment to try something for the first time” she added.
The training will be delivered by Frank Fahey, a leading practitioner on physical activity nationally. He has designed and delivered the Good2GO Training programme in Kildare, Limerick & Offaly in response to a need for a more Physical Activity centered approach to Active Retirement groups.
“Those looking to sign up can opt to complete all three workshops for €20, or can complete one for €10. The type of people we are targeting are young people, volunteers, day centre staff, nursing home staff, and anybody currently working with older people or who has an interest or a passion for ‘activating’ older adults,” the community development officer said.
