Members of Clannad say they are heartbroken by the sudden death of the band’s guitarist Noel Duggan.

Noel was the uncle of the Brennan family and helped form the band back in 1970 with his late twin brother Padraig.

He passed away suddenly while out with friends in Loughanure last night.

Clannad said “We are heartbroken to share the news that Noel Duggan, our beloved Uncle, trusted friend, and founding member of Clannad, died suddenly in Donegal yesterday evening.

“He was 73 years old. Noel will be forever remembered for his outstanding guitar solos, his love of music and his dedication to the band.

“Tá muid croíbhriste faoi bhás Noel.
Uncail, cara, agus ceoltóir iontach.
Ar dheis Dé a raibh a h’anam uasal.
Máire, Ciarán & Pól
RIP – Nollaig Dílís”
