Letterkenny’s first changing places toilet to be built in retail park

Donegal County Council is moving forward with plans to have a fully accessible public toilet in the Letterkenny Retail Park.

A ‘changing places’ toilet is now due to be installed by early 2023.

The lack of toilet facilities at the Letterkenny Retail Park has long been a topic of discussion, and it has now emerged that the council proposes to submit a planning application for the project in the next two weeks.

A Changing Places facility is a public toilet specially designed for use by people with complex and multiple impairments/disabilities that require the help of up to two carers, with extra space and facilities to allow them to use the toilet.

Last year Donegal County Council was allocated €75,000 under the Disability Participation and Awareness Programme to build such a facility and support other disability projects in Donegal.

Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh has been campaigning for the facility on behalf of wheelchair users in Letterkenny for the past year.
