Donegal Gardai warn elderly about bogus Gardai calling to homes

Donegal Gardai have issued a warning to elderly people in the county to be aware of bogus Gardai calling to homes.

Gardaí in a number of Divisions are investigating recent incidents where bogus callers posing as Gardaí have been targeting elderly people’s homes in a money scam.

A Garda spokesperson said “Criminals such as these can strike in any part of the country and it is wise to keep up to date with recent types of scams/incidents. Please be vigilant.

“Don’t open your door to anyone before you have confirmed who they are and what they want. Check identification, where appropriate.”

Contact your local 24/7 Garda Stations if you are in any doubt.

* Letterkenny 074-9167100
* Milford 074-9153060
* Buncrana 074-9320540
* Ballyshannon 071-9858530

* Keep your front and back door locked and ensure that windows are closed and secured also.

* Ensure that the exterior of your home is well lit up as this may act as a deterrent and will also allow neighbours to have a better view of your property.

* Use your door viewer and chain/limiter. Ideally invest in a CCTV camera system for the house or a panic alarm pendant which can be obtained for free.

* Do not keep large amounts of cash in your home. Use banks, building societies, credit unions, post offices etc. as much as possible. Keep all credit and debit cards in a secure location, including bank and other financial books and statements etc.

* Ring your local Garda Station immediately to report any of these type of callers or any type of suspicious caller to your home.

Please keep an eye on your neighbours, particularly the elderly and vulnerable as the darker evenings have arrived. Report all suspicious activity in your area and note relevant vehicle details if possible. Suspicious activity of any sort in your area should always be reported to Gardaí.

Please pass this advice on to those within your community who may not have access to social media.

REMEMBER IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT!
