Finn Valley’s Sean McGinley finishes brave sixth in Junior Men’s 4,000M

Finn Valley’s Sean McGinley put in a brave effort but had to settle for sixth place at the Junior’s Men’s 4,000 metres at the National Athletics Championships today in a time of 18.28.

McGinley had plenty of home support out in force in Downings but it wasn’t enough to get him a top three place.

The young Glenswilly man (pictured above by Joe Boland) put it up to early leader and eventually second placed Dean Casey of the Ennis Track Club.

However, the eventual winner, Mid Ulster AC’s Nick Griggs ran a superb race to eventually pull away from Casey in trying and windy conditions in Downings.

McGinley claimed first place in the junior race at the Autumn Open on Oct 16th and spoke in his post-race interview of the desire to take the next step.

However, while he may not have got in the medals on this occasion he is an athlete who is improving all the time.
