After more than a year of work on the implementation of the plan, the Toraigh Language Plan will be officially launched and celebrated this week.

The launch will take place on November 24, at 1 p.m. in the Social Club, Toraigh. Cathaoirleach Údarás na Gaeltachta, Anna Ní Ghallachair will officially launch the Toraigh Language Plan before the community.

This launch and celebration will be a significant event in the history of Toraigh. The island is the strongest Gaeltacht area in the country with 90% of locals being able to speak Irish. Toraigh is famous for the vitality and strength of the Irish culture that can be found there.

However, Toraigh people have long been struggling and campaigning for the future of the island and in the past there was a danger that the whole island would be abandoned. Fortunately, the Toraigh community is alive and well today and the community in general and the Language Planning Committee are determined to make sure that there is a bright future for the people of the island and for Irish as the everyday language of the community.

The entire committee is delighted that the plan can now be officially launched. As well as the launch in the Social Club, there will be a gathering in the Tory Hotel that night. At 7 p.m. the new book on Sean Nós singing, “Dhá Leagan Déag” will be launched in the hotel. Following that, at 8 p.m., there will be a night of entertainment in the hotel with music, singing, conversation and company with the people of the island and visitors alike.

Contact the Language Planning Officer on optthorai@gmail.com or 086 0858245 if you wish to be present at the launch and celebration of the language plan on 24 November.

I ndiaidh corradh agus bliain oibre ar chur i bhfeidhm an phlean, beidh Plean Teanga Thoraí á sheoladh go hoifigiúil agus á cheiliúradh ar 24 Samhain, ar 1i.n. sa Chlub Sóisialta, Toraigh. Cathaoirleach Údarás na Gaeltachta, Anna Ní Ghallachair a dhéanfas Plean Teanga Thoraí a sheoladh go hoifigiúil i láthair an phobail.

Ócáid mhór i stair an oileáin a bheas sa tseoladh agus sa cheiliúradh. Tá Toraigh ar cheantar Gaeltachta chomh láidir agus atá sa tír. Tá labhairt na Gaeilge ag 90% de mhuintir na háite agus tá cáil ar an oileán as beocht agus neart an chultúir Ghaelaigh atá le fáil ann.

Mar sin féin, is fada muintir Thoraí ag streachailt agus ag feachtasaíocht ar son todhchaí an oileáin agus san am a chuaigh thart bhí an chontúirt ann go mbánófaí an t-oileán ar fad. Ar ámharaí an tsaoil, tá pobal Thoraí beo bríomhar sa lá atá inniu ann agus tá rún daingean ag muintir Thoraí agus ag an Choiste Pleanála Teanga déanamh cinnte de go mbeidh todhchaí gheal roimh phobal an oileáin agus roimh an Ghaeilge mar theanga laethúil an phobail sin.

Tá lúcháir ar an choiste uilig gur féidir an plean a sheoladh go hoifigiúil anois. Chomh maith leis an tseoladh sa Chlub Sóisialta, beidh teacht le chéile in Óstán Thoraí an oíche sin. Ar 7i.n. beidh an tOllamh Lillis Ó Laoire ag seoladh an leabhair úir “Dhá Leagan Déag” a bhfuil sé féin mar chomh-eagarthóir air. Sna sála aige sin, ar 8i.n., beidh oíche áirneáil san óstán le ceol, amhránaíocht, comhrá agus cuideachta le muintir an oileáin agus cuairteoirí araon.

Déan teagmháil leis an Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga ar optthorai@gmail.com nó 086 0858245 más mian leat a bheith i láthair ag seoladh agus ceiliúradh an phlean teanga ar 24 Samhain.
