Peter O’Donnell sweeps up Clean Coasts Ocean Hero award

Arranmore man Peter O’Donnell has been awarded the Individual of the Year title at the Clean Coasts Ocean Hero Awards 2022.

Each year, the Ocean Hero Awards honour the invaluable contribution Clean Coasts volunteers, groups and communities have made towards conserving our spectacular coastline. The winners were announced today at an event in Dublin celebrating and thanking the groups, individuals, communities, and businesses who, throughout the year, have done outstanding work to protect their local coastline and environment.

Peter has been involved with Clean Coasts since 2012. He joined due to the unsightly volume of pollution on our shores, which was also noted and commented on regularly by visitors to his Island.

Peter normally hosts at least 6 beach cleans per year, encourages the schools and locals to annually get involved in the Big Beach Clean, and has set up litter stations at the local beaches, which include pickers and bags, to encourage anyone using the beaches to do a #2minutebeachclean.

Peter was acknowledged today for his drive to initiate change and inspire others to do more to protect and conserve the local coastline.

This year, Clean Coasts has chosen 7 dedicated categories with a total of 28 groups, organisations and individuals shortlisted for the title of Ocean Hero within each category.
