Carrigart/Downings gets tourism boost with €500K for green pathway

Thew tourism industry in Carrigart and Downings received a huge boost this morning following the allocation of of €500,000 for a new pathway for walkers, joggers and cyclists.

Minister Heather Humphries announced the grant for what is being described as an “important tourism infrastructure project” for the area.

Local TD Joe McHugh welcomed the announcement.

He said this is an important tourism project which will benefit greatly a growing tourism destination and will enable active local participation in walking and jogging.

McHugh added “Donegal County Council have been very proactive in assisting with this application and helped navigate an Environmental Impact Statement assessment in conjunction with Udaras na Gaeltacht” – “The Community Development section of the Council deserve high commendation for their work on Fanad Arch, Errigal pathway, Muckish Greenway and Slieve League.”

Deputy McHugh acknowledged the role of former County Councillor Noel Mc Bride, Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh and local community leader Columba Boyce for their help with the project over the years.

McHugh also said “Minister Heather Humphries visited the area on two occasions and became aware of the importance of this important project from a Tourism and safety point of view.”

“This work will begin in 2023 and I look forward to the completion of these works for the benefit of people from the local area and tourists alike.”
