A Donegal County Councillor has claimed that lobster pots in south Donegal are being raided by people for food.

Councillor Niamh Kennedy told the Joint Policing Committee meeting that fishermen have reported that pots are being raided at St John’s Point by people who are cooking the stolen produce on the beach.

“The food is being robbed and cooked on the beach. That’s what is happening and it is incredible,”: she said.

The thefts were one aspect of an overall issue raised by Councillor Kennedy around the installation of CCTV at piers.

Councillor Kennedy said that there had also been an increase in the theft of engines form boats especially over the summer months.

She said she would like to see the installation of more CCTV at piers and harbours in Donegal.

She added that this would also serve as a deterrent from anybody thinking of using local piers to land illegal drugs.
