A West Donegal Councillor says more investment is needed to ensure more main arteries are gritted each winter.
The Leitir – An Dúcharaidh road was an “ice rink” earlier today with cars unable to stay on course. An accident was also reported on the Caravan Road in Dungloe.

Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says the council should be supported to add to the winter maintenance programme each year. Donegal County Council currently covers 6,600 kilometres of road across 21 routes.
“I understand that the council can’t do every road, but they need to look into expanding the capacity. We need to be adding all the time,” Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said.
“Gritting is badly needed on the Meenbanad road from Kincasslagh to Dungloe where there is a history of accidents, Maghery, the Caravan road and the Leitir – An Dúcharaidh road. They are treacherous this week. People are crawling on their hands and knees to get across.
“I recognise the council staff are driving on treacherous roads themselves in big lorries and I praise the communities trying to make their area safer for home helps and doctors to drive through. These are main arteries and they need more investment.”
