Man to stand trial for murder of his mother in Doochary

December 12, 2022

A 61-year-old man is to stand trial for the murder of his mother at their home in Co Donegal.

Ruth Lohse, who was in her 80s, died following a fire at her home in the village of Doochary on April 12th this year.

Her son Guenter Lohse appeared at Letterkenny District Court for the service of a book of evidence in the case.

Garda Sergeant Gerard Dalton told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to send the accused forward for trial at the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court.

The two charges are murder and also causing criminal damage to the value of €25,000 to a house belonging to Martin Caulfield.

An earlier charge of arson with intent to endanger life had been withdrawn.

In September, the court heard that Lohse was deemed fit to stand trial following an assessment by a clinical psychologist.

Lohse was arrested a short time after the fire at the house in which his mother died and has been in custody since.

His solicitor, Mr Tom McSharry applied for both a senior and junior counsel in the case.

He also sought legal aid to allow for a translation of the Book of Evidence from English into German as he said his client had poor English.
