GAA clubs across Ireland are being invited to apply for grants towards improving existing walking tracks located on club grounds.
The grants are being provided in partnership with Healthy Ireland with the purpose of maximising participation in physical activity within clubs and across the wider community with a particular focus on persons with mobility issues.
Under the grant scheme approx. 22 clubs will be approved for grants of €10,000, approx. 12 clubs will qualify for grants of €25,000 and approx. 5 clubs will qualify for grants of €50,000.
In welcoming the initiative Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh said that clubs in Donegal should consider applying as it offers an opportunity to have their facilities more widely used by the local community and would prolong the use of their facilities, particularly during the Winter months. There is also an opportunity to enhance the walking infrastructure within local communities and to provide a safe environment for people with mobility issues and wheelchair users to participate in their local community and exercise and socialise at their local club.
A total of €800,000 is being made available under the scheme, and it would be nice to see some of that money making its way to clubs in Donegal.
The closing date for applications is 5pm on Tuesday 31st January, and application forms can be accessed from the GAA.IE website.
