Donegal Gardai have warned drivers not to think about driving under the influence of drink or drugs over the festive season.
Gardaí from the Roads Policing Unit in Letterkenny spent the night out patrolling the roads and conducting checkpoints.
Given the state of the roads following the snowfall overnight, they were astounded to have had occasion to arrest a driver on suspicion of drug driving In Letterkenny Town in the early hours of this morning.
The driver’s oral fluid tested positive for cannabis on the new drug testing device, Drug Wipe 6S.
An arrest was made and a blood specimen was then collected at the Garda Station. This specimen will now be sent to the MBRS for analysis.
A spokesperson said “We are well aware that we are in the middle of the so called ‘Silly Season’ but silly does not adequately describe a decision to drive while under the influence especially in such treacherous road conditions.
“Never get behind the wheel of any vehicle while under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Do not make selfish decisions that could cost others their lives.”
