Lebanese investigators have identified suspects in the fatal shooting of Irish United Nations peacekeeper Seán Rooney, according to reports.

Private Seán Rooney, 24, from Dundalk/Newtowncunningham, was laid to rest in Donegal this evening, one week after being killed on active duty in South Lebanon. He was travelling to Beirut airport with colleagues last Wednesday when their UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) vehicle was ambushed.

It’s been reported today that Lebanese security services are searching for a number of suspects linked to the attack. So far, no one has been arrested.

The attack remains under investigation by UNIFIL, the Lebanese Armed Forces, and Irish authorities.
