Donegal vocal group Onóir has recorded a poignant cover song to remind us of other people’s plight this Christmas.

The band has released a heart-rending recording of ‘Mad World’ and an accompanying music video to raise funds for the North West Simon Community.

Group members Deane James, Tom McHugh, Diarmaid McGee, Declan Gaughan teamed up with Clare instrumentalist Tara Howley for the charity release, which is raising thousands of euro through online donations.

“Every contribution makes an enormous impact, whether you can donate a little or a lot,” the Onóir group said.

“The North West Simon Community works diligently in supporting the needs of persons who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

“They work tirelessly in representing each person’s right to an appropriate home of their own and the support services necessary.

“Thank you so much for your support.”

The North West Simon Community recorded a 30% increase in the number of households seeking aid this year.

So far in 2022, North West Simon Community has assisted 243 households. Of these households, 16 people were living rough when they first made contact, 10 were living with a threat of violence, 44 were facing the threat of eviction, and 138 households were living in conditions that equate with extreme overcrowding, unfit housing, or insecure accommodation.

“North West Simon Community has always been heavily reliant on public donations, but we need the public’s help NOW more than ever before,” said CEO Noel Daly.

Mr Daly said the assistance the charity provides is needed more than ever before.

“We are appealing to all those who can. Please donate to North West Simon Community and enable us to continue our vital work with some of the most vulnerable in your community.”
