People are being urged to take extra care near the Donegal coast today due to a wind alert.

There is a risk of wave overtopping, as strong and gusty winds hit the north west. There is also a risk of hail and thunder, according to Met Eireann.

A status yellow wind alert is in place for Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo and Donegal from 10am today (Saturday) to 8am tomorrow (Sunday).

Met Eireann is forecasting a cool and windy day across Ulster with sunny spells and with showers spreading eastwards to all areas, some heavy with hail or thunder. South to southwest winds will increase fresh, strong and gusty with gales in coastal areas of Co. Donegal. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees.

Tonight will continue windy with clear spells and showers, some heavy with a continuing possibility of hail and thunder. Fresh to strong, gusty west to southwest winds with gales in coastal areas of Co.Donegal. Winds will ease somewhat overnight. Cold with lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees.
