A new programme to enhance and improve health and wellbeing of inhabitants on Arranmore Island will be launched shortly.
‘Active Arranmore’, a new programme administered by Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC), will be officially unveiled on Saturday, January 28.
It is a one-year programme, funded under the Empowering Communities programme, which intends to enhance and improve health and wellbeing of inhabitants and empower individuals and community groups.
The programme aims to utilise the island’s recreational and natural facilities and enrich the experience of living in this unique rural location. Activities are designed to encourage social interaction and movement for those of all ages and abilities. The programme includes activities such as team sports, dancing classes, social events, and activity challenges. The initiative hopes to improve the awareness and understanding of mental health through mindfulness and wellness activities.
Commenting on the launch of ‘Active Arranmore’, Margaret Larkin, Community Development Manager, DLDC, said: “DLDC is delighted to facilitate this initiative on Arranmore. The island has great facilities and stunning natural infrastructure and the additional support offered through the coordination of health and wellbeing activities will help residents of the island access those facilities in a more sustained and accessible way”.
Commenting on Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) support of the ‘Active Arranmore’, Myles Sweeney Coordinator, Donegal Sports Partnership, said: “The DSP welcome this investment in developing the ‘Active Arranmore’ programme and the collaboration with the various agencies and local community to provide many engaging health and wellbeing opportunities for the local community”.
The programme is open to everyone on the island, with a particular emphasis on activities for young people, Ukrainian refugees, and people over 65.
An ‘Active Arranmore’ Co-ordinator has been appointed to aid the better coordination and promotion of health and wellbeing activities.
