Irish workers for Google are uncertain of their future as the company’s parent Alphabet is eliminating around 12,000 jobs worldwide.
Google employ over 5,000 workers in Ireland and as they look to cut their workforce across the globe by 6%, there are fears for the workers in the company’s European Headquarters in Dublin.
It is not yet clear what impact the announcement will have in the country,
The layoffs are global and will impact US staff immediately, with Alphabet already emailing affected employees, while the process will take longer in other countries due to local employment laws and practices.
Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai said in a staff memo that the company had rapidly expanded headcount in recent years “for a different economic reality than the one we face today.”
“I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here,” he said.
The announcement comes just days after fellow tech company Microsoft announced it would be cutting 10,000 jobs worldwide and is another blow for the tech sector.
