Gardaí have confirmed that fire damage caused to a patrol car outside a local station was ‘malicious’.

It is believed the incident, outside Castlefin Garda Station, occurred at around 4am this morning.

The alarm was raised by a passing motorist and the building was unmanned at the time.

A garda source told Donegal Daily the fire was ‘malicious’ and are appealing for witnesses.

The car was destroyed in the blaze and the town is now without a permanent patrol car.

A similar incident took place there several years ago when a private car belonging to an on-duty was burned.

Anyone with information should contact Castlefin Garda Station on 07491 46113 or the Garda Confidential Line on Free-phone 1800 666111.
