Michael Murphy was honoured by Dublin City University at their university’s annual Alumni Awards.

Murphy, who currently works as Head of Sport at ATU Donegal, was a student at the university and graduated from PE with Biology in DCU in 2013.

Murphy announced his retirement from inter-county football in November after 17 years of playing at the highest level, winning five Ulster titles and becoming only the second person to captain the Donegal senior team to winning the Sam Maguire in 2012.

Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, producer of An Cailín Ciúin, who graduated from the BA in Journalism programme in 2001, was also a recipient of the award.

Cleona’s mother, Ellen Crowley (née Doherty) hails from Gaeltacht Ross Goill near Downings and her uncle, Michael Doherty and family own and run the well-known pub, The Singing Pub (An Síbín Ceoil) on the Atlantic Drive near Downings.

A spokesperson for DCU said the winners ‘represent a diverse field of DCU graduates who have excelled across health care, law enforcement, Gaelic games, the arts and financial services.’
