A woman in her thirties has died after a car entered the Castlebar River in the Mayo town last night.
Emergency services were alerted at around 11.45pm after a car was seen in the river near Hoban’s car park.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her body has been taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.
The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone who saw the incident to come forward to Castlebar Garda Station on 094-9038200, while anyone who was in the area between 10pm and midnight and has video footage is asked to make it available.
