Letterkenny man who abused hospital staff while drunk to be monitored

A Judge has said she wants the court to monitor a young Letterkenny man charged with being drunk and disorderly on a number of occasions at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Brian Crawford, of Whitethorn Close, was due to be sentenced at Letterkenny District Court this week.

He is charged with being intoxicated in and in the vicinity of the hospital on two different dates in August last year.

On one occasion while drunk, Crawford is accused of abusing hospital staff.

His solicitor, Mr Frank Dorrian, made an impassioned plea on his client’s behalf when he appeared in court.

Mr Dorrian said Crawford was devastated by the fact that he finds himself before the court accompanied by the publicity it brings to him and his family.

He said the reality was that his client’s behaviour simply worsens when under the influence of alcohol and that it is not the type of behaviour he would normally accept from himself.

However, Judge Eiteain Cunningham said the difficulty is that that these were serious matters which happened in the confines of the hospital and added that she was told this was not the first conviction he has.

She asked Gardai if he had come to their attention since and was told he had not.

Mr Dorrian added that his client is seeking counselling and that he is doing “everything in his power to keep this thing under control.”

Judge Cunningham said she would like to keep Crawford’s situation under monitor and adjourned the case until June 19th next.

“We’ll see if he comes to Garda attention in the intervening period,” she added.
