Majella O’Donnell selected as a Global Hero of Hope

Breast cancer survivor Majella O’Donnell has been named as a Global Hero of Hope for Relay For Life Donegal.

Majella is a long-time supporter of the Relay for Life fundraising and remembrance movement alongside her husband Daniel, who is a patron of the charity.

Tipperary native Majella was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013.  Months later, she made the brave decision to have her head shaved live on The Late Late Show, a feat that raised €700,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

Majella is one of two amazing Relay For Life volunteers who have been named as Global Heroes of Hope by the American Cancer Society.

As a Global Hero of Hope, Majella will represent Global Relay For Life, The Irish Cancer Society and Relay For Life Donegal publicly.

Heroes of Hope symbolise the courageous struggle of all cancer patients as they deal with the physical and emotional aspects of their cancer journey. Cancer survivors inspire Relay for Life volunteers by reaffirming their mission, and reinforcing, in a personal way, the need to eliminate cancer from our lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding the cures, and by fighting back.

The Relay for Life Donegal committee shared their delight at the recognition for Majella and said: “Since 2012, Majella has supported Relay For Life Donegal, by promoting the event, recruiting survivors and participating in the weekend with her husband Daniel- patron for the Relay For Life Donegal.

“We are thrilled for Majella to receive this recognition for all her amazing support, and know she will be a brilliant worldwide ambassador for Relay.”

Majella will appear as a guest speaker at the Relay For Life Donegal launch on February 7th at Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny at 7.30pm.

On the night, attendees will hear from Majella about how she got involved in Relay. Attendees will also find out ways to get involved themselves and learn about the incredible difference the funds raises makes to cancer patients and their families. All welcome.
