Sadness at passing of Finn Harps legend Declan McDowell

There has been huge sadness at the passing of Finn Harps legend Declan McDowell.

Declan passed away peacefully on 31st January 2023 after a period of illness, and will be well remembered at Finn Park.

McDowell, who was at Finn Harps for the guts of a decade, was part of the Harps’ starting side that won the 1974 FAI Cup, the only major trophy in the clubs history.

He also played in all of the clubs ventures into European competitions, and is 10th on the list of the longest serving players in the history of the side.

Finn Harps paid tribute to a key figure of that successful side, saying: “Everyone at the club wishes to offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Declan McDowell who sadly passed away yesterday.

“Declan was part of our 1974 FAI Cup winning team and is 10th in the club’s all time appearances list.

“May he rest in peace.”

A native of Derry, he also went on to captain Derry City, and is one of a select few players to play for Derry City in both the Irish League and the League of Ireland.

Devoted father of Roddy, Declan, Holly and Shannon. Dearest father-in-law of Elizabeth, Kyra, Brendan and Shane. Loving granda of Ryan, Rory, Alfie, Declan, Bradán and Rían.

A much loved brother of Kay, Kevin, Pearse and Pat. Deeply regretted and sadly missed by all of his wider family circle, friends and neighbours.

Declan’s remains will be reposing at his late family home, 13 Lindenwood Park, Foyle Springs. Funeral leaving from there on Thursday, 2nd February at 11.20am for 12.00pm Requiem Mass in Holy Familly Church, Ballymagroarty. Burial will take place immediately afterwards in the City Cemetery.
