Mary’s Meals co-ordinates emergency response with partner in Syria

International school feeding charity Mary’s Meals has launched an urgent appeal to help feed vulnerable children affected by the recent earthquake in Syria.

The country is already one of the poorest in the Middle East. Plagued by civil war since 2011, most young children have never known peace or stability in their lifetime and face enormous challenges in being able to attend school and get an education.

Mary’s Meals, which has an active fundraising branch in Donegal, has been providing food to children in the city of Aleppo since 2017, working in collaboration with its experienced and trusted partner Dorcas. The school feeding programme normally reaches 5,024 children across 18 places of education.

As a result of Monday’s earthquakes, many schools are now being used as shelters for those who have lost their homes, leaving children out of class and more vulnerable than ever. It is vital that Mary’s Meals continues to reach those children with a daily meal in order to give them a sense of security as well as much-needed nutrition.

Graeme Little, Chief Programmes Officer at Mary’s Meals says: “The experienced and highly skilled team at Dorcas is already mobilised and going out into communities with food supplies. We are determined, despite the earthquakes’ devastation, to keep our promise by providing children with essential daily meals. Our emergency appeal will ensure the continuation of our work under these deeply challenging and unstable circumstances.”
