Two men have died and another is in a critical condition after a car entered a river in Galway this morning.
Gardaí said they received a report of a car in the water at Menlo Pier on the outskirts of Galway city at around 2.40am.
Three men were taken from the River Corrib and transferred to University Hospital Galway, where two have since died.
The third man is described as being in a critical condition.
The scene at Menlo Pier is currently preserved for a technical examination and the services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested.
Local people in the quiet community around Menlo Pier expressed deep shock at the fatal incident.
Padhraic Ó Fathaigh lives close to the pier and told RTE News he heard a siren and voices at around 3am and went to investigate.
“I said he saw a black car overturned in the water and multiple vehicles including fire engines and ambulances,” he said.
“Gardai were trying to pull the car from the water with a rope. It’s just tragic.”
