Pauric McGarvey has been officially co-opted onto Donegal County Council.

The new Independent councillor will replace his uncle, Ian McGarvey, who was Ireland’s oldest public representative.

At 92 years young, Ian stepped down recently having served the people of Donegal without fear or favour.

The motion was proposed at today’s special meeting of the council by Cllr Kevin Bradley.

Cllr Bradley said the McGarveys were “very good people” and that he had known Pauric for years.

“I would like to thank Ian who was a bundle of wisdom for me and a massive help and I hope to do the same for Cllr Pauric McGarvey,” he said.

The motion was seconded by another Independent, Cllr Nicholas Crossan.

Glowing tributes were again paid to the outgoing Ian and the new councillor and his family were given a warm welcome to the Chamber by fellow councillors and senior council staff.

For the last time, Ian McGarvey rose to his feet to thank everyone for their kind words.

Lastly, Cllr Pauric McGarvey made a brief statement, saying he was taken aback by the kind words from fellow councillors and staff.

“I will be as committed as Ian has been and will be giving it my all in the very near future,” he said.
