Iceland sells all of its Irish stores, but jobs saved

Supermarket chain Iceland has sold all 27 of its stores based in the Republic of Ireland, including the Letterkenny branch.

Employees were notified by a text message yesterday stating that they now work for a new company – The Project Point Technologies.

Iceland has said that the employment status of Iceland Stores Ireland Limited‘s employees are secure under the deal.

The Project Point Technologies will continue to operate the Irish stores under the Iceland brand as part of a franchise agreement, while the Iceland Foods Group focuses on UK operations.

Dublin-based Sinn Fein councillor Daithi Doolan has called for an urgent meeting between Iceland workers and the new owners.

“Staff were told by text that they no longer worked for Iceland but were to go to work as normal the following day. This is an insulting way to treat staff.

“Staff are understandably very stressed about the future of their jobs. Staff have families to care for, bills to pay and mortgages to pay.

“The new company must give an assurance that pay and conditions remain the same. The company must also urgently engage in face to face meetings with staff and give a guarantee that all jobs at all 27 stores are safe. Nothing less is acceptable for these workers in Ireland.”
