Watch: Donegal’s Caitlín puts Paul Mescal’s Irish to the test, and he passes!

Irish actor Paul Mescal was left a little flustered by some ‘Donegal Irish’ at the BAFTAs, but he rose to the challenge with the support of TG4 presenter Caitlín Nic Aoidh.

Caitlín, from Falcarragh, enjoyed a great night with the stars on the BAFTAs red carpet last night.

And when Aftersun actor Paul Mescal came up for an interview, she decided to test his Irish.

“Ní thuigim do chuid Gaeilge (I don’t understand your Irish),” Paul admitted at the start, but he didn’t give up, and soon eased into the interview.

Fans were impressed with Mescal’s skills, despite his apologies that his language is leaving him.

“Tá do Ghaeilge foirfe,” Caitlín encouraged him, before he eventually gives up!

“I did my best,” Paul admits.

According to Caitlín, he passed with flying colours and a screentest with TG4 could be in his future!

One popular tweet from social media analyst Stephen O’Leary @stephenoleary said: “When you have limited Irish, or it’s been a long time since you last used it, speaking can be intimidating. Mescal feels the fear, and gives it a go – I love this interview.”

It was a big night for the Irish at the BAFTAs, with The Banshees of Inisherin picking up four prizes. The dark Irish comedy, which had 10 nominations, won outstanding British film, best original screenplay, as well as best supporting actor for Barry Keoghan and best supporting actress for Kerry Condon.
