Scoil Mhuire Creeslough is set to gain a new ASD classroom for pupils with Autism, commencing in the new academic year 2023-2024.

Progress on the project was confirmed this afternoon by Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh.

Deputy McHugh said: “This is truly very welcome news for the children who will benefit, their families and the local community.

“I met with the Board of Management in Creeslough earlier this year, and their application for the ASD Classroom was discussed as one of the school’s priorities.

“I wish to acknowledge the SENO (Special Educational Needs Organiser) and NCSE for working with Brenda Collins and the team at Scoil Mhuire in ensuring they secured this important facility at the school.

“Approval to proceed to construction for 2 mainstream classrooms, 1 WC, 1 x 20m squared SET Room and an internal corridor was granted in December 2021 and I was delighted to see the pupils and staff moving in to their new extension earlier this month. This project has been a major development for the school and the local community.

“I would like to thank the officials in the Building Section in the Department of Education for their work on this development and for retaining two modular classrooms at the school earlier this year.”

Scoil Mhuire Creeslough was also included, as one of only five schools in the County, in the Safe Route to School Programme in December 2022, allowing the school to improve their walking and cycling facilities to the school.

“I wish to commend the hard work and commitment to the development project at Scoil Mhuire Creeslough by Principal John O’Doherty, by Margaret-Anne O’Reilly and the team on the Board of Management and by Fr. John Joe Duffy, who have fought over the last number of years to ensure these projects came to fruition, and the staff and parents who have supported these ongoing developments every step of the way,” concluded McHugh.
