The death has been announced of Rocco McGinley, a much-loved teenager from Buncrana.

Rocco, a funny and loving young man, died this morning at the age of 15 following two years of cancer treatment.

He passed away surrounded by his loving family.

Rocco was diagnosed with a brain tumour in October 2021. Since then, he has inspired an entire community with his determination to overcome his illness.

Rocco travelled to Texas for intensive treatment last year with the support of a major fundraising drive called ‘Rocco’s Road to Recovery’.

Always smiling, Rocco endured his challenges with a brave spirit and strength beyond his years.

He passed away surrounded by his loving family.

Condolences have been expressed to Rocco’s parents, Yvonne Hegarty from Rathmullan and Wade Mc Ginley from Buncrana, and his brothers and sisters.

A tribute from Rocco’s school, Scoil Mhuire Buncrana said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our 3rd Year student, Rocco. Rocco passed away earlier this morning surrounded by his loving family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his mum and dad, his brothers and sisters and all his extended family and friends. May Rocco rest in peace.”

‘How very quietly you tiptoed into our world, silently, only a moment you stayed. But what an imprint your footprints have left upon our hearts’.

RIP Rocco McGinley, 2007-2023
