Locals in Killybegs got very excited this week when they came across a penguin waddling along the quay.
A number rushed to get a snap of the bird which they thought had perhaps stowed away on board a boat coming into the local harbour.
Coincidentally there are four Norwegian boats in the port which set brains racing that this must be the case.
And when the bird refused to take flight, it was decided that it MUST be a penquin!
A number sent pictures to Donegal Daily but we decided that instead of getting feathers ruffled and winging it we’d contact Ireland’s foremost expert on birds, ornithologist Niall Hatch (yes that’s his real name!)
Unfortunately, Niall clipped our wings and told us that the bird in question was actually a common guillemot.
Niall, who works for Birdwatch Ireland, says the bird normally remains well out to sea and are rarely seen around harbours.
He said he appreciated how people may mistake them for penguins adding “We get that quite a lot. They do indeed look very like penguins, though are perfectly able to fly.”
