A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of the body of a man at a house in Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
The emergency services were called to a house fire on Pheasanthill just outside Castlebar at around 6.30pm yesterday evening.
The body of a man in his 80s was discovered inside the house with what is understood to be gunshot wounds.
The victim was the subject of a Garda investigation in relation to a number of allegations of abuse which had been made against him. The Irish Independent reports that the victim had appeared in court just days before his death.
Gardaí have confirmed that a man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently detained in Castlebar Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours.
