A Donegal church has secured a relic from a Polish saint.
The relic from St Faustyna’s from Krakow has never been in Ireland before but is expected to be placed in St Mary’s Church in Convoy on Sunday, March 19.
Work has been underway for some time to secure a first-class relic and organisers are delighted to have secured the relic which will be placed in the church.
Father Eamonn Kelly is delighted that permission has been granted and that the relic will be kept in the Convoy church.
He said: “St Faustyna was a Polish nun who died when she was very young and she had apparitions of Jesus so what has developed from her encounters with Jesus is Divine Mercy – the whole idea of focusing on divine mercy.”
The formal application to Krakow had to be accompanied by a letter from Bishop Alan McGuckian.
Fr Kelly added “We were delighted when we got the letter back saying that our application was granted. Then a number of people went across to Krakow to collect the relic across.”
Once the relic is placed in the church it will be kept in the country.
“I think it is a wonderful gift to the parish and to the diocese,” he said.
On March 19, people will gather at Broadpath outside Convoy. People are being asked to park in the church carpark where there will be a minibus waiting to bring them out to the path. A walk with the relic will then take place towards the church.
“We will walk into the church and we will be in the church around 2.45pm where there will a lovely prayer service. We will then have a talk from Sister Benedetta and she is one of the sisters of the Merciful Jesus – one of the visions St Faustyna was that she would start a new congregation, a new order,” he said.
